What actually counts as a variation
6 min readA variation is any work that isn't in the scope you quoted. That's the whole test. It doesn't matter whether it's big, whether it's quick, or whether you feel awkward about raising it.
Three things generate almost all of them: something hidden turns up when you open the job, the customer changes their mind, or another trade's work isn't as expected.
Steps
- Compare what you're about to do against your written scope
- If it isn't in there, it's a variation — regardless of size
- Decide immediately, not at the end of the day
- Tell the customer while you're both standing in front of it
That's the free lesson
